One of the things that I miss most about teaching 5th grade math is the multiplication unit! Maybe it’s because multiplication is my favorite operation (I know that sounds nerdy but it’s true!) or maybe it’s because multiplication is so hands on. These worksheets on multiplication for grade 5 is how I make math hands on and engaging for my students!
How to Multiply a Whole Number
Before we dive into the worksheets on multiplication for grade 5, let’s tackle how to multiply a whole number. While I also love helping students learn what multiplication is and how to learn the multiplication math facts, I’m talking more about double digit multiplication.
I use different strategies for teaching how to multiply a whole number. These include strategies like:
- Partial products
- Area method (box method)
- Base ten blocks
Each of these strategies build really well into the traditional algorithm which is the Common Core State Standard for 5th Grade.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
In 4th grade, students learn how to multiply a whole number using startegeies grounded in visual models and base ten. 5th grade takes that to the next level and requires the algorithm we all grew up with.
I spend a lot of time connecting their learning for 4th grade to the new learning of the algorithm. Color coding is so important for this step. I have students work out a problem using their own sstratgey and then we share them as a class. Then, I take different highlighters to show the same step in different strategies. I eventually turn this lesson into a math poster for students to reference later.
Multiplication for Grade 5 Unit
I didn’t have a curriculum to teach from my first year in 5th grade so I made my own. This was a big undertaking but one that I was thankful for the following year since the work was done! In this unit I start with teaching partial products and the area method as a refresher. Then move into the algorithm.
This unit has all the worksheets on multiplication for grade 5 that you could ever need! There are notes pages for each lesson with a matching video which is perfect for a flipped classroom or students who are absent. After the notes page, there is a practice worksheet that can be used as homework or in class practice. Each lesson has an exit ticket for formative assessments and taking small groups. There’s a quiz, study guide and test included so that you can also check in with student learning. Keep track of data with data tracking sheets and organization pieces to keep you on track too.

Multiplcation and Division Math Problems in Task Cards
Trying to use more technology in math class? I love using digital task cards for independent practice, a technology station or in case of emergency sub days. This set of task cards can be used digitally with google slides and forms. Or they can be used paper pencil style with printable cards and a recording sheet. There are 24 cards in total but you can assign however many you want, the flexibility is yours. These multiplication and division math problems task cards can fit easily into any math station rotation you want to use.
Curious about using math stations in your classroom? I share EVERYTHING you could want to know about math stations in this 5 part video series. Short but jam packed videos and workbooks help you learn how I set up, plan, and prep for math learning centers in my upper elementary classroom. From who to help, to how to prep, and when to do math stations, I share it all! Drop your email below and get the 5 part video series sent straight to your inbox!
Games and Worksheets on Multiplication for Grade 5
If you have spent any length of time on my blog or instagram, you’ll know I love math games! Practicing is so important in math but it doesn’t have to be a bunch of boring worksheets on multiplication for grade 5! I use games during math station rotations or as an activity during WIN block (what I need).
Each of the games mentioned below are divided into different levels. There are 2 digit by 1 digit game boards, 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and even 3 digit by 2 digit games. Students can pick their level or you can assign levels to different math station groups.
4 in Row
Connect 4 but make it math! My students love this game and can be so competitive with it! Students work to solve a multiplication problem and then check their answer with their partner. If the answer is correct, they place a marker on the board. First person to make 4 in a row wins!
I love the self-checking component and the fact that this is a print and play game! No pieces to cut out or lose all around your classroom. I use colored counters or mini erasers as markers in my game station but other than the copies for the board, there’s no prep!
5th Grade Multiplication Worksheet Tic Tac Toe
This 5th grade multiplication worksheet Tic Tac Toe game is similar to 4 in a Row but with another classic game. Students are still solving problems and checking their answers with their peer. But instead of 4 in a row, students are playing Tic Tac Toe. No pieces or assembly required for this one!
