Have you ever felt yourself standing in the middle of a store aisle feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what you even need? I have felt this way standing in front of the cleaning aisle looking for something to unclog a drain, and while trying to shop for my friend’s baby shower, and trying to find a coffee creamer that sounds good but not too much sugar or calories. Truth is, I feel that overwhelmed sensation far too often when trying to buy something. There are too many options in the Target aisle! Do you know where else there are million of options? Teachers Pay Teachers. Luckily this round up of worksheets for grade 5 maths is here to relieve that overwhelm!
With all the options possible under the sun, TPT is a very overwhelming space at times. It’s like the Amazon of the teaching world. You can have anything you need at any time, with free shipping (aka download & go). And while Teachers Pay Teachers has saved me so much time, I have also spent too much time looking for what I need. I especially felt that way when I changed grade levels 5 times in my first 5 years of teaching. Talk about overwhelm!
The truth is, teacher friend, it doesn’t have to be that way! I’ve rounded up the top 5 must-have worksheets for grade 5 maths and the different options you have when it comes to each type. There’s no need for overwhelm, you’ve got this! As a disclaimer, I have used every product at some point in my teaching career, possibly for a different grade, but I have used it. I don’t want to recommend a resource I haven’t tried myself!
Math Lesson for 5th Grade Worksheet Types
You are going to need something to teach from, so we will start with the most obvious type of worksheet. The math lesson for 5th grade worksheet options are really notes sheets but at a 5th-grade level. 5th graders are new to taking notes, so scaffolded notes or fill-in-the-blank type notes are easy for students to learn the skill of note-taking without getting overwhelmed.
When looking for notes sheets, short & sweet is best. A good notes sheet will provide the content in small bite-size pieces. 5th graders really only have about a 10 minute attention span so if notes take longer than that, students will lose interest.
The notes included in this bundle are 1 page and include a video that students can watch. This is a great option if you are looking for a flipped classroom option or if you want to have a video on hand for absent students.
These 5th Grade Math Guided Notes are a bit longer in length but can be broken down into notes & guided practice for students to complete.
Grade 5 Math Games
Math games as worksheets? Of course! I’m rounding up anything printable as a worksheet but some of these game options are as easy as printing & sliding into page protectors! Math games are such an easy way to spice up your math lessons. Even if you aren’t doing math learning centers, math games are easy to incorporate as practice after a notes lesson.
When looking for math games that are fun, I try to find some with competition and focus on partners practicing. It’s always a plus if there isn’t a lot of preparation for math games. Games that have simple instructions are also key as I want my students to practice math more than trying to figure out how to play the game.
I also want to make sure that the games we play in class provide meaningful practice for students. I love games that are self-checking so that as students are playing they know if they are getting the math correct right away.
The first game up is this set of Tic Tac Toe games. Most students know how to play Tic Tac Toe so the rules are simple. Students solve a math problem, their partner has their answer so students can check if they are correct. If they are right, they take a turn at Tic Tac Toe. Students keep playing until someone wins Tic Tac Toe, but most often there are rematches galore!
Similar to the Tic Tac Toe game above, is this set of 4 in a row. I like these games because the topics are a bit more mixed up. For example, the decimal version has all four operations in 1 game board. This is awesome for reviewing before the unit test or as a spiral review during the school year. Again, the rules are simple to follow and the boards are self-checking for students.
5th Grade Morning Work
Daily math practice is key to learning any concept, no matter the grade! While this can look like homework in some classrooms, I prefer to keep the practice in the classroom. 5th grade morning work has looked different for me over the years so below are a few different options. Some are a faster spiral review, which is great for shorter class periods. Other options are great for partner practice. This is an area of TPT where more choices are better so pick a few that work for you!
This is my favorite for daily warm-up spiral review. I love the structure of it and students know what to expect each day. The number of the day concept is one student remember from elementary school and I will sometimes let a student pick the number for the next day. There are 3 sets 1 for whole numbers, 1 for fractions, and 1 for decimals. Each set has 15 weeks so your daily practice is taken care of for the year!
If you are looking for 5th grade differentiated math made easy then this pack is perfect! While simply a set of worksheets, this is great to level your practice. I used them for math learning centers and independent practice. They are laid out in a way that isn’t overwhelming for students so this would make a good homework option in my opinion.
Looking for word problem-specific practice? This set of Word Problems Collaborative Worksheets is seriously so fun! Give students a problem and have them solve it on a post-it note. Students then look for similarities and differences in the way to solve word problems. These are definitely a must-have set of worksheets for grade 5 maths!
Digital 5th Grade Math Questions
In this day and age, digital practice is here to stay. But that doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated for you to create! While I love using digital platforms like Kahn Academy and Prodigy, I also like having a set of digital worksheets and practice for students to complete. I really only use digital options during math stations or leaving for sub plans. But students stay engaged with these options.
I love task cards, so I knew I wanted to find a digital set to use in a pinch. This set lets students show their work on the card (so key for 5th grade concepts!). It’s also pretty easy to assign to students using our digital platform so checking is a breeze!
Error-Analysis is another skill that students need so this option combines that needed skill with digital assignments. Both the digital and paper option in this set have a writing component and have students find the correct answer. Writing in math does throw some students off, but practice makes perfect. Plus with the digital option, you don’t have to fight the battle of trying to read some student’s handwriting (no, it’s just me who has some questionable hand writers?).
Fractions for 5th Grade Worksheets
Oh, fractions! 5th grade is all about fractions so the more the merrier when it comes to teaching resources! I love using the above resources to teach fractions but I usually spend more time in my fraction units so I like having fraction-specific resources for those units. Plus, spicing up a ‘boring’ concept can help students grasp it!
These fraction anchor charts are a great way to build fraction number sense as a whole group. This set is awesome because it includes traceable charts and fill-in-the-blank ‘mini charts’ for students to fill in and keep for reference in their notebooks. I sometimes use these as math notes pages or to review before the unit test.
Remember Mad-Libs? Well, this set is all about fraction operations! I will give the disclaimer that this set is better for higher 5th grade learners or 6th graders in general because it includes all 4 operations for fractions. Common Core for 5th grade doesn’t include fractions divided fractions but if your state does include that standard for 5th grade then this is perfect! Kids have so much fun with this and I like that I can use it as a review during my fraction units!
Adding and Subtracting Fractions is so confusing for students but this intervention pack has a great variety of activities to practice. The dominos are a fun option for stations and the mazes are great for subs or earlier finishers.
I feel like you can always use a set of task cards and this set is focused on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. I have this blog post all about how to use task cards easily without stress if you are interested in getting some ideas!
