I’m beginning to think I’m the queen of math games. Between Tic Tac Toe, 4 in a Row, Wordy Land, whole group math game ideas, and math stations in general, I love all things math games! So today I’m sharing another game! Dice games how to play in math class are here to answer all of your questions!
When do I use all of these math games? While I do play some of them in place of whole class lessons, I usually use partner math games as a math station rotation idea. If you are curious as to how I set up math stations in my 5th and 6th-grade classroom then be sure to grab my complimentary 5-part video series all about how to start math learning centers! Drop your email below and you’ll gain access to the who, what, when, where, why, and how to math stations. From math station rotation ideas to using timers for classroom use and staying organized, I dive into it all!
Dice Games for Math Skills
Yes, dice games for math skills are a real thing! I use dice to help students create their own problems. This keeps students interested since they are making up the math. And dice games for math skills also have, you know, math with it!
You could very easily have students roll some dice and make the types of problems you are currently working on. But this lacks the structure of where to put numbers. And students could just be rolling dice without doing any math!
If you let students just magically make up their own dice game, there is also the struggle of figuring out who wins!
To combat both the lack of structure and arguing over who wins, I created a template. This still leaves students to create their own problems using dice but helps students stay organized and on task during station time.
Double Dice Games How To Play
The double dice games how to play tutorial is pretty simple. Students simply roll a pair of dice (double dice, get it?) to fill in the blanks on their game board.
Then they solve the problem they created.
After that, students will determine who wins. Some of the double dice games involve comparing answers for each round. Some have adding answers at the end. This part depends on the type of skill that is practiced!
5 Dice Games for Kids
I love dice games for kids to play during math stations because it is low prep! These print & play game boards don’t require any laminating or cutting out of pieces. And while it does use dice, there aren’t any other pieces involved to be lost! If you don’t have dice, there are random dice generators online that students could use.
Another great thing about these dice games to teach math is that they can be reused! I leave out a set or 2 for about a month so that students can practice and create their own problems over and over again.
To make it more rigorous for the upper grades, I use different types of dice that make the problems more challenging!
