My love for creative math posters cannot be contained! I love using math anchor charts in my teaching and have shared a bunch of easy and creative math poster ideas in this blog post. Today I’m sharing my favorite decimal in place value chart ideas and inspiration. So if you teach 4th-6th grade and want some decimal anchor chart ideas, you’ve come to the right place!
How to use math posters
First up, how do you use math posters in your classroom? I have used anchor charts in so many different ways so I’m constantly switching it up. Here are some of my favorite ways to use math posters.
Record of student learning
An anchor chart can stand as a record of student learning during a lesson or topic. I just started hanging up a blank chart at the beginning of the unit. Every couple of days, I will have a student come up and summarize what we have learned in the last few lessons. This is a fun twist on a summary of a lesson. And this type of math poster is a great way to get student voices into the room.
This would also be a fun way to place math exit tickets on the way out the door. You could keep correct exit ticket responses on the poster for students to refer back to during the unit. That also means that the blank math charts could be reused each school year!
Use Math Posters as Warm Ups
Ever heard of the number of the day? This idea for math posters came from that setup! I have a math poster that is interactive for students. Whether it is the problem of the week or a set of prompts to answer about a particular number, my students can come in and get started on the warm-up without me having to set up my projector.
I usually take some of the prompts from my 5th grade morning work bundle. There is 45 weeks’ worth of pre-made prompts and numbers that are perfect for spiral review! Grab the 5th grade morning work bundle here!
Math Posters as Fast Finishers
Similar to using charts as a warm-up, I like having a math poster that is made for students to work on if they finish something early. I use my Coordinate Plane Anchor Chart during that unit for 5th and 6th grade. I also use my decimal in place value chart as a fast finisher and spiral review in 4th and 5th grade.
This idea could also refer to math poster projects! I have a few of those up in my Teachers Pay Teachers shop if you are interested in showcasing student learning in poster project form. These could be a fast finisher option, or extension or even as an end of the year activity! Check out the bundle of math poster projects here! Or grab the set you need.
Traceable Decimal in Place Value Charts
I love using traceable decimal in place value charts. They are simple to use and help creat charts that are readable and logically laid out. This helps the math posters serve as a reference for students later in n the unit or school year. I created traceable decimal in place value charts in this bundle! Super easy to use, just project and trace with any marker. There’s also a set of fill in the blank charts are great for math interactive notebooks or for teaching 5th graders how to take notes.
