Creative Math Poster Ideas
Before we get too far into the math poster project ideas, I want to set some guidelines for how to use these ideas in your classroom.
First up, I like to give my students options when it comes to showing what they know. Choices are such a big part of my math classroom. If you want to learn more about student-centric learning methods, be sure to check out my blog post here.
I like to take a bunch of different creative math poster ideas and pull them into a choice board. This way, my students have options to choose from while still staying on topic with math. Any of the ideas from this post would make a great choice board. If you are looking for choice board templates, I have a set in my Teachers Pay Teachers shop that works perfectly with Google Slides. Be sure to check it out here!
Another creative math poster idea is to use these ideas as an assessment. Students can show what they know in a more engaging way than a paper-pencil test. This is another way to reach a variety of learners while still assessing their content knowledge.
I also like to use a math poster project as one of many end of year activities for 5th grade. If you are looking for more end of the school year activities then be sure to check out this blog post where I round up 10 different activities for upper elementary and middle school.
Math Poster Project Ideas
Let’s dive into the good stuff! These math poster project ideas are perfect for upper elementary students but can easily be adapted higher or lower depending on your grade level. For reference, I consider 6th grade upper elementary since I’ve taught it in both elementary and middle school.
All About Me Math Posters
If you are looking for a fun back to school math poster project, this one is perfect! I love learning about my students and this way, students can also learn about each other. Students share about themselves using numbers and equations.
Some examples include:
- Number of siblings
- How old you are
- The year you were born
- Your birthday for example 9/16
- Number of pets
- Number of letters in your name (could be first, first and last, or all of your names)
- Number of places you have been
- How tall you are
- Your shoe size
- And so much more!
As an added challenge, I have my students try to create the most complex equation they know. Some students will use subtracting with regrouping to get the year they were born or even the number of pets!
You can use this math poster project in a few different ways. The first is to have students make their own and then hang them up in the hallway or classroom. Another way would be to have students share about themselves using the all about me math poster as a prop or tool.
You can also have students solve each other’s all about me math poster in pairs or trios. This way students are getting to know the people at their table for example while also doing a little bit of math.
Maths Posters Ideas for Content
This is an end of unit idea to help students review all of the math content that they learned in the unit. I simply grab a few pieces of butcher paper and let my students work with their table partners. The goal is to have the steps, examples, and word problems for whatever topic we just finished.
I like this math poster project because it is low prep on my end but high on the math content. Students are referring to their notes, math interactive notebooks, anchor charts, and the vocabulary word wall. They need to pull together all of the information in a way that fits on one paper.
If you rather have a little more structure for your students, I love using a choice board template for this math poster idea. Students can pick whichever prompt they want and then turn it into a poster. Song lyrics, calculators, example problems, and vocabulary words all make great math poster projects as well as references for other students to use.
Sometimes, I have my fast finishers create math anchor charts for the current topic to hang on the wall. This not only helps my fast finishers stay on content but also helps me with my ideas for math posters. Student-created resources can be such a powerful statement in any classroom. Just ensure to check for accuracy before hanging them up…I’ve forgotten this a time or 2 on accident!
Project Based Learning
This is my favorite way to use math poster project ideas in my classroom! I love taking a topic and creating a project based learning unit around it. Some topics lend themselves better to this than others but here’s my short list of go-to’s.
- Fractions- think baking, cooking, or measurement
- Decimals- think shopping, area, perimeter, planning a road trip
- Geometry- think area of rooms, perimeters of gardens, shapes in the real world, making roller coasters, treasure maps
- Whole numbers- everything?!
If you teach 5th or 6th grade math, I’ve created a bundle of math poster projects for you to use in your classroom. These fit within the Common Core Standards and would make a fun wrap-up activity for a unit, use as an assessment, or use during those random short weeks during the year.
